Lunch at Gylen Castle - Kerrera

Again a nice calm day with good sunshine.
Set of from the slip and headed across the sound to the Island of Kerrera, passing by the big Green and Red Navigation buoys .. over ground where in the past I got many a good catch of scallops, diving in the deep channel. Once across I turned south and at a steady pace, paddled to the southern tip. There although still calm, the sea was undulating with big incoming Atlantic swells, making the turn a bit tricky. A balance between staying close to shore and not so close as to catch the rebound waves from the swells impacts. Anyway after a few anxious moments the cape was made and the turn made towards the southern beaches of Kerrera. In the distance Gylen castle stood dark and shadowed from the eastern sun. I made landing on one of the pebbled, maybe slightly rocky, beaches under the shadow of the castle.
A great sense of achievement passed over me ... Although to many a trivial paddle - to me the 6.9 kilometres had marked a huge turning point in my life. From the depths of depression and ill health, seeing me literally on deaths door only a couple of years ago .. now, with the skills of a great surgeon, support from my wonderful daughters and a sad belief that Im still twenty five years old ... I was here! Six point nine kilometres across the sea, cooking my lunch of mash potatoes sausage and beans, under a blue sunny sky next to a castle... That's got to be good!
After a short rest and some adjustments to the kayak seat, I set of on the return. In all I did thirteen kilometres in three hours, at a leisurely pace. Arms a little tired, back a little sore and a wet bum, but ok for day 3 of the sea trials.
