Just a quick note or two:
Received to day the cabling and adapter to allow me to connect my Garmin Etrex Venture hand held GPS to my Laptop.
Follow up:
Not absolutely crucial, but having that ability is going to afford me more flexibility in deciding how I intend to manage route planning. Clearly the route itself is obvious and to a large extent pre-defined. Just follow the coast line! But, given the rocky nature of much of the Last Colonies coastline, its going to be important to always know where one is in relationship to all possible safe landing points. The weather can turn quickly and unexpectedly. I don't ever want to be more than half an hour from such a point. The laptop I'm taking is a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro running Ubuntu OS. Its a bit bigger and heavier than I would like, but its what I've got and I cant afford to replace it.
I'm intending to maintain my own power generating system, based around a combo of solar panels and a wind turbine. This would be augmented by occasional connections to the electric grid when at a permanent camp site facility. Ill discuss in more depth, how the system will work to power the laptop, gps, mobile phone and recharge any other batteries used for miscellaneous purposes, in a later post.
